Class A Motorhomes

We are going to start with the biggest and most expensive RV type out there, the class A motorhome. Class A motorhomes resemble a bus and usually range anywhere from 28 ft. to 45 ft. in length. These motorhomes are built on a special chassis. One of the biggest differences in class A’s is the fuel type. Class A diesel motorhomes, or “diesel pushers” are usually longer in length and more expensive than class A gas models. They are referred to as diesel pushers because of the rear diesel engine. There are a few exceptions out there, with some manufacturers still producing front engine diesel motorhomes. 

Class A Diesel Motorhomes

Class A diesel pusher are manufactured by popular RV companies like Tiffin Motorhomes and Newmar. The diesel pusher is an ideal motorhome for full timers and people going on extended, cross country trips. They often provide more luxurious amenities than your average RV. Longer diesel models often come with four slide outs, and some models even include two bathrooms! Diesel pushers are the most expensive type of RV out there. 

Prices for class A diesels usually start at around $100,000 for used diesel motorhomes and can range anywhere from $150,000 to $500,000 for new models. Some of the most luxurious diesel motorhomes, like the Prevost, can cost you upwards of $2 million! 

Class A Gas Motorhomes

Much like the diesel pusher, class A gas motorhomes provide many amenities, but at a lower cost. Class A gas motorhomes can range anywhere from 25 ft. to 40 ft. They are also built on a special chassis, often manufactured by Ford. Newer class A gas RVs usually have one to two slide outs and the engine is located at the front of the RV. These motorhomes are still ideal for extended trips with the whole family. Used class A gas motorhomes can start as slow as $40,000. New class A’s can range anywhere from $95,000 to $200,000. 

Class C Motorhomes

Class C RVs are a shorter type of motorhome. Usually they are built on a truck chassis, manufactured by either Ford, Chevy, or Mercedes Benz. You can recognize a Class C RV by the extended front cab over the windshield. Often times the cab-over space will have a sleeping area or a storage area with a TV. Class C RVs can range from 21 ft. to 36 ft. usually.

Class C motorhomes are still ideal for extended family travels. Although they’re shorter in length, many models provide enough sleeping space for upwards of 6 people. Newer class C RVs come with one to two slide outs. Class C’s provide all the amenities that a class A RV brings, but everything is just a little shorter. The benefit of owning a class C RV is the fact that they’re easier to drive and park. You can also enjoy a wide variety of campsites because of the shorter length of the motorhome. 

Class C RVs on a Ford or Chevy chassis usually have a gas engine. Class C’s on a Mercedes Benz sprinter chassis have a diesel engine. There’s also a type referred to as a “Super C”. Super C’s are larger than your usual class C RV. They sport a powerful diesel engine and can range from 36 ft. to 45 ft. in length. Class C prices can start anywhere from $25,000, for used gas models. New models usually start at $70,000 and can go up to $200,000 for the larger diesel models. 

Class B Motorhomes

Class B’s are the ideal recreational vehicle for adventurous couples and digital nomads. They’re often referred to as camper vans. They are much shorter in length than your standard motorhome. The biggest advantage to owning a class B RV is that you can practically go anywhere! They’re very easy to drive and you won’t have any trouble finding parking. 

Class B RVs typically range from 19 ft. to 25 ft. but they have all the essential amenities of a recreational vehicle. They’re often cleverly designed in order to provide as much storage as possible. Class B vans even have amenities like toilets and a shower. Of course everything is much, much closer and tighter. If you don’t mind small size, the class B camper van is the ideal RV for you. Prices can start from $20,000 for older, used class B’s. New models can range anywhere from $60,000 to $180,000, depending on the fuel type and quality. 

It’s also worth mentioning that there’s a type of RV called B+. Class B+ motorhomes are very similar to class C’s. The difference between the two is that B+ types do not have the extended cab-over. Many manufacturers are starting to phase out the term B+. Companies like Winnebago have started classifying B+ models as class C’s. 

Choosing The Right RV

In conclusion, the three different types of motorhomes serve different purposes. The class A motorhome is the largest type of RV and it has the most amenities. Class C RVs are just a little smaller and sit on a truck chassis. Class B motorhomes, or camper vans, are the shortest type of motorhome, but they’re easier to maneuver.
